Report on a Presentation at the 5th Workshop 2014:
The Design of Education for Future Generations and Learning Environments through the Development and Utilization of New Technologies/General, Japanese Society for Information and Systems in Education (JSiSE)
"Comparison and Analysis of Individual Learning with Videos on Tablet Terminals and Classroom Learning with Videos and Explanations"

On January 10, 2015, I participated in a workshop of the Japanese Society for Information and Systems in Education (JSiSE) held at Osaka Sangyo University. I gave a presentation titled "Comparison and Analysis of Individual Learning with Videos on Tablet Terminals and Classroom Learning with Videos and Explanations."

 

As the background to this research, regarding the implementation of tablet terminals, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) has been discussing the full development of education by providing one information terminal per one child under a safe and secure environment (2011) as a main policy toward 2020. The Report on the Learning Innovation Project (2014; English title is an unofficial translation) lists classroom learning, individual learning, and cooperative learning as occasions for lessons utilizing ICT at elementary and junior high schools. Among this list of possibilities, our research focuses on the utilization of tablet terminals for individual learning. It is expected to verify the effects of using tablet terminals at the individual learning level and changes in the consciousness of students that occur by having explanations about learning content available through videos on tablet terminals.

The aim of this research is to investigate changes in the learning of individual students watching videos, and changes in the learning of others who received some explanations about the learning content of videos.

 

For this research, we conducted Experiment I and Experiment II.

In Experiment I, we asked 60 college students to watch tablet materials (a video of red-eared slider turtles). The Ministry of Environment designated red-eared sliders as an invasive alien species in January 2014 and developed a policy to regulate its import and breeding.

In Experiment II, we had two groups: A group of "experts" (30 persons) who listened to explanations by an expert about the video, and a group of "teachers" (30 persons) who listen to explanations by a teacher about the video.

For both Experiment I and Experiment II, we conducted questionnaire surveys using a 5-point scale before and after each experiment. In Experiment I, regarding the statement, "Compared to 50 years ago, the number of red-eared sliders has been increasing in Japan," the points they got after watching the video were 1.57 higher than the ones they marked before the experiment. We found that people can gain knowledge from videos even if there is no explanation provided. For the statement, "Red-eared sliders should be expelled," we could see a high level of consciousness for not expelling them in Experiment I, while participants of Experiment II tended to show no opinion. Regarding influences by human activities, MEXT indicated that we should try to develop an attitude to value lives and contribute to the perseverance of the natural environment (2008). We could observe changes in people's consciousness to value lives through the explanations of the video. I consider that it is necessary to combine the videos on the tablet terminals used for individual learning and explanations for classroom learning. Another possibility would be to have classroom learning at school in addition to individual learning at home.

 

As future tasks, we will need to conduct statistical analyses of practices for high school students, gender differences, and relations with experts or teachers in detail, in addition to the analysis of free descriptive answers.
